Vince Gilligan Reveals He Knows How Pluribus Will Conclude... At the Moment.

The creative mastermind could not have predicted that his new science-fiction series would become a cultural phenomenon. “God bless the fans,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as widely discussed as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the hit program reaching its finale—and Season 2 already in development—the creative team opened up about the viewer reception and whether it will influence the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

One could easily to get distracted by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.

“It feels like an endless supply of your favorite dessert and being tickled to death,” he describes. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Never in my life Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd never leave my living room.”

Despite his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to take it in stride and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by what people are saying.”

“We prefer to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan concludes.

The Big Question: Has the showrunner Have a Plan for the Finale of Pluribus?

Given that the creative staff aren’t being guided by fan response, does it imply they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… sort of.

“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, one could always use the classics?

“My dream is Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
