UN:Me: A Psychological Horror That Blends Silent Hill and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to blend the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"This is a distinctive game where a girl containing multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her exist four separate souls, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These souls can seize control spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, while additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate chapel.
An Environment of Individual Horror
"What are you fearful of? What causes you uneasy?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to other people can trigger something primal within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around controlling the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these identities will change against your will during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and attack the girl one after another. When the soul shifts, so does the particular terror the player encounters.
Unsettling Visuals and a Fatal Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers where their necks should be. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "real" one. "All four souls asserts that the physical form belongs to them," explains a creator. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they are forced to destroy it. But, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already destroyed the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration states. "The final entity standing could be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on digital storefronts.
