The people of Israel mark second anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace negotiations advance
Israelis have assembled across the country to commemorate two years since the Hamas-initiated offensive on that fateful day in October 2023, as talks proceeded in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in Gaza.
The attack led to over 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most fatal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel responded by beginning a military offensive in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.
"Our aggressive opponents have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on that day.
He also vowed to "achieve all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the elimination of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again present a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The government authorities rescheduled formal memorials until October 16th - after the conclusion of the festive season - but events still took place throughout the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the victims' relatives, it was broadcast throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected across the country.
Ceasefire Meetings in Egypt
Simultaneously, both sides' negotiating teams met in the Egyptian tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a second day of third-party negotiations to examine the terms of the proposal.
A prominent representative familiar with the talks said that an night meeting of negotiations started at 19:00 Cairo time.
The representative explained the morning session ended without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not restart fighting after the first phase of the agreement.
He commented that the discussions are "challenging and have not yet achieve any real breakthrough," but mentioned that mediators are working hard to reduce the gaps between the two sides.
Critical Issues in Discussions
- A lasting truce
- The exchange of the hostages still detained by Hamas for inmates from Gaza
- The pullout of troops from Gaza
- Measures for relief supplies provision
- Post-war governance of the area
Civilian Reaction
In the city's Hostages Square earlier, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother lived through the assault on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and numerous more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "No location feels like home now and until every captive are released none of us will be secure."
"Once we see everybody home again, we can feel relief anew. Then we can begin to heal," she continued.
In front of the leader's home in the capital, people congregated to express their support for the families of the captives. Israel reports forty-eight remain in detention in Gaza, twenty of whom are believed to be living.
Demonstrator a participant stated: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement required for the captives to be released. But we really want promises that we will be safe."
Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of Israelis want the war to finish in return for the freedom of the hostages.
Palestinian Conditions
At the area of the music event, those paying respects assembled to pay their respects.
From there, the sound of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where witnesses reported the severe Israeli bombardment carried on.
In the main city, bombardments were reported in the morning of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the north-west.
"When the night falls, the fear arrives with it," relocated urban resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was killed by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.
"Me and my three children are terrified of the air strikes. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, notably my youngest child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Every second we monitor the reports to see what happened. And I'm worried that this truce will not be finalized and that the conflict will come back to us."
Medical Crisis
The medical facility in Gaza City reported it had taken in the bodies of several people by the daytime, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the southern district.
Another medical facility in the southern city of that area indicated additional dead people had been delivered. An individual was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking help to the south, medics reported.
