The esteemed football figure has declared that he is avoiding a return to football management, noting that it would be difficult to recreate the higher calling he felt as the national team coach.

He expressed his aim to channel his attention toward working with the youth and addressing what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook presently existing in the country.

Exploring New Avenues Away from Coaching

In a recent radio interview, he was questioned on speculation linking him with vacant management roles in the Premier League and abroad.

“My role with England was not just a job—it was a mission representing my nation,” he responded. “That’s going to be very hard to replicate. Having had 37 years in football I’m enjoying finding other areas where I think I might be able to make a difference.”

A Passion for Positive Examples

Leading up to the release of his forthcoming publication, his new work on leadership, Southgate emphasized that he is “very passionate” about offering guidance for the youth, applying insights from his tenure as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his role as a father.

Southgate maintains that his journey coaching England, during which the team evolved from being deeply unpopular to broadly loved, holds wider relevance.

“We had a huge disconnect with the public when we started,” he noted. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Reflecting on his role as a parent, Southgate commented: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He went on: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Common Ground Above Division

Southgate asserted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the societal attention often centers on disagreement.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he stated. “Economically lots of places are in tough situations now and that’s going to prompt desires for change. But I have seen the ability to unite the country. I saw during Covid people doing shopping for the neighbours and that’s when we as a nation are at our best, when we’ve been pushed into a corner and come out and shown resilience.”

His forthcoming book, Dear England, is set to present further insights on guidance and public spirit drawn from his distinguished professional journey.
