Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The ex-president was found guilty of planning a military coup in September and handed more than over two decades in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.
This involved seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".
Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the detention, the judge said information from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, his son Flávio, who serves as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's move to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a history of arranging to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The legal document underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is situated around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist US President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being detained in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the Supreme Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under house arrest, with tracking devices.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to depart his residence for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to murder his opponent and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
The plot was thwarted because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without incident on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged public facilities in the national capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been provoked by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, reestablish control and bring him back to power.
At the time, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The one-time head of state called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 presidential election.
