The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Campy Joy – However It Has Transformed Into a Strategic Method to Gloss Over Warfare.

A new term came to light several months following the onset of Israel’s bombardment of Gaza. Labeled WCNSF, it stands for “Wounded child, no surviving family”. This acronym is specific to Gaza, as stated by doctors such as paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for doctors to care for a young patient who has been bereaved of their complete family. But, there has been nothing “normal” regarding the devastating conflict in Gaza, where whole bloodlines have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other region in the world. Nothing ordinary about numerous doctors arriving back from a landscape of rubble with testimonies of children being intentionally shot at.

A Living Nightmare Regardless of a Reported Truce

Gaza remains an utter catastrophe. Critical healthcare resources are failing to reach those in need, and international watchdogs assert that violations are continuing. Authorities rejects these allegations, just as it refutes all charges it is implicated in. Yet as grieving children who lost parents are now enduring frigid conditions in temporary shelters, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision song contest from continuing with its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” The contest will continue to roll out a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Since this, it seems, is what unity resembles.

The contest, notably prohibited Russia from participating in 2022 due to the “serious conflict in Ukraine”. Yet the conflict in Gaza appears to be treated differently.

A Double Standard

Forget the fact that Israel was criticized for questionable voting tactics last year in what appears to have been an effort to politicise Eurovision. Set aside the news that a toddler was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza just days ago. Neglect the data that settler violence and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have surged. Forget the fact that global media are still prevented from freely reporting in Gaza. All of this, evidently, should be seen as a barrier of Eurovision’s self-proclaimed spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On Amidst Unimaginable Suffering

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza now. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. A contest that was originally built on harmony has transformed into a cynical way to whitewash war.
