That Gory Animated Film Ending That Stays With Fans
Out of all the mature cartoon movies I have ever viewed, nothing has stuck with me as much as the terror-laced ending of the graphically gory as well as deeply subversive film from 2022 The Unicorn Wars.
Back in 2015’s, this Spanish writer-director crafted a dark, melancholy and frequently brutal universe with some tiny , desolate hints of optimism.
While The Unicorn Wars feels like it came from a drive to push the medium further, the filmmaker stated that it was actually a try to express a global, multicultural theme regarding “the common origin of each battle.”
That message is communicated by means of a group of brightly hued teddy bears , clearly modeled after a popular line of cuddly figures.
Growing up in a culture built around warmongering as well as the military-industrial complex, many of these creatures are obsessed with exterminating unicorns, thanks to a religious scripture that claims the bears they were once rulers of the woods, before the horned beings forced them out.
Some haven’t fully accepted the propaganda, , prefer to try out narcotics and mate in the woods.
In contrast to their gentle equivalents, these vivid animals display sexual organs , definite sex drives.
For one notably brutal, pessimistic creature, Bluey, the conflict against unicorns becomes a road to power — and particularly to dominance over his softer, nicer brother the bear Tubby.
The character is a bully , a seeming psychopath , and as terror overcomes his unit and claims his fellow soldiers individually, he grabs increasingly control personally, in increasingly bloody, damaging approaches.
Simultaneously, the unicorns are suffering their own horror, as a growing, destructive monster in their forest.
“At the beginning, it seems like a humorous movie,” the director commented. “Yet it evolves into a more intense and melancholic film. And ultimately, it’s a horror film.”
The Unicorn Wars commences resembling among the quirky movies from a legendary animator, that uncover a mischievous joy in allowing animated figures curse, engage in violence, or sex each other up.
Afterward it turns into closer to a bleaker work from the same director, with increasingly graphic violence and a palpable link to the actual suffering of battle.
In the finale, it becomes a complete theatrical horror bloodbath.
The horror which makes this an ideal spooky-season viewing begins a lot earlier than indicated.
Unicorn Wars is ideal for the devoted fans of gore, for lovers of extreme cinema who want to see something they haven’t ever watched previously, and can endure a plot that pulls unflinching brutality.
Watch it with the lights off free from interruptions, and the finale will burrow under your skin and linger.
