Taliban Used Abandoned UK Technology to Track Down Local Nationals Who Worked Alongside Allied Forces, Inquiry Is Told

A whistleblower has disclosed the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK abandoned classified technology permitting Afghanistan's rulers to track down local individuals that had served with western forces.

Data Breach Puts Numerous in Danger

The whistleblower, called Person A, testified that people concerned by the information breach were told to move homes and alter their phone numbers to avoid detection from militant forces.

Members of Parliament are looking into the UK government's response of a catastrophic leak of personal details concerning nearly 19,000 individuals who had asked to come to the UK to escape the regime.

The Information Breach Happened

A spreadsheet with confidential details, comprising names, addresses and in some cases relative details, was mistakenly released by a worker working at special operations center in early 2022.

The leak became known in late 2023, when identities of multiple applicants who had requested to move to the UK were posted on Facebook.

Militant Technology

Many believe there's a misunderstanding that the Taliban do not have similar capabilities that western nations possess,” the whistleblower testified to MPs.

Technology was deserted in Afghanistan; they possess it. Should they obtain mobile details, they are able to track you down to within metres. That is what intelligence groups achieved.”

Under inquiry about whether the Taliban had access to sophisticated technology, the source stated: “They've got everything.”

Consequences of the Information Leak

Initial findings provided to the investigation indicated that no fewer than forty-nine family members and co-workers of individuals impacted by the breach had been murdered.

A superinjunction concerning the leak was put in force in late 2023 and blocked any information concerning it from media reporting until recently.

Security Recommendations

Because she was restricted, the source and the volunteer organization she collaborated with informed individuals at risk they were assisting that they had “apprehensions that mobile communications had been intercepted”.

“We recommended that they change residence when possible and changed their phone numbers. That constituted the primary information that, if authorities had access to such data, would result in them being traced,” the source testified.

Disputed Conclusions

The source disputed that internal investigation conducted by a former official had been wrong to state that the acquisition of the records by the Taliban was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are not standing up to militant forces; they are in hiding. Everything boils down to their previous employment.”

She detailed disturbing treatment suffered by affected individuals, including electric shock torture, waterboarding, and severe beatings.

“There are cases of toddlers who have had limbs fractured to force relatives to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
