Vicky McClure will return their roles in the acclaimed police drama

The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.

An upcoming six-episode series created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."

The last series concluded in recent years with a finale that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread ever since, but official word only came recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by production details.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."

Fresh Face and Intricate Plot

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we are thrilled to be returning for a new season."

He added: "Corruption in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my imagination."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the people I've worked with I now call dear friends."

"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy Line of Duty is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Dunbar again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Series Legacy

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the new season will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.

Nevertheless, the corporation confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
