Crew Member Reveals Depression In the Wake of Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.
The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also carried well-known figures.
The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, describing a phone call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the landing.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her background – was buried under the tide of misogyny.
She is best known for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after an attack during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.
A Path to Recovery
Months following reaching space, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the well-wishers whose messages of encouragement helped save her. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.
She added that despite the negativity, considerable good had come out of the experience, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also comprised accomplished professionals from different industries.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
