As per a recent publication, however, that honor should go to a mechanised sawmill invented by Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon during 1593.
“Before automated sawing, constructing a simple merchant vessel required around 10 lumberjacks working for three months,” writes the author. “With wind-driven sawmills, an identical quantity of cut lumber might be manufactured in less than a week.”
Thanks to their speedy automated cutter, which turned timber to boards with virtually no human effort, Dutch builders were able to construct ships more quickly than any other nation, an advantage that unleashed one hundred years of Dutch maritime, economic as well as artistic supremacy in Europe and the world.
The First True Manufacturing Device
Corneliszoon’s lumber mill, argues the writer, was “mankind’s initial authentic factory apparatus.” A wind turbine rotated a wheel. One component transformed the rotary movement to vertical action for the cutting blade. A separate mechanism changed that same spinning movement into a sideway’s movement feeding the timber toward the blade. A geared mechanism moved the log ahead one precise increment each stroke.
