A large-scale rescue and recovery mission is currently ongoing in the Caribbean waters for a pair of lost sailboats loaded with humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.

Military Rescue Missions Launched

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched navy personnel and military search aircraft to locate the two vessels, which were had on board at least nine total sailors, as stated by a navy statement.

The ships had been expected to make landfall in Cuba's capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and no official word of their docking, the statement clarified.

The Situation of Aid to the Nation

The island nation has depended significantly on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country endures widespread power outages across the country.

"Both skippers and their teams are veteran seafarers, and both vessels are fitted with appropriate safety equipment and emergency beacons," an official associated with the mission stated.

The nine individuals on board are citizens of Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has opened communications with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their consular staff.

"We are co-operating fully with the officials and continue to be hopeful in the capability of the sailors to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Previous Humanitarian Shipment

Just days before, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare another boat that had delivered a significant amount of donated goods to the nation.

That ship, nicknamed "Granma 2.0" following the name of the vessel in which Fidel Castro landed in Cuba to launch the armed struggle in the 1950s, carried solar equipment, medicines, baby formula, bikes and food.

Larger Geopolitical Backdrop

Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the Communist-run nation was initiated.

Global bodies have since highlighted ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k surgeries postponed in Cuba due to electricity supply constraints.

Political measures have increased lately, with statements from different representatives highlighting the delicate situation regarding diplomatic ties.

In response to certain statements, a high-ranking Cuban official declared that "the political system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that early stages of talks had begun, although their current progress remains unclear.

The maritime authorities stated it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to find the sailboats and ensure the security of the sailors.

As of now, there has been silence on the lost ships by the Cuban government.
